Quality, value and service...
what more can you ask for in your local store?
A true family business, in 1953 the building became a general DIY store known as Avery’s.
Taken over in 2002 by Raj and Jag Gadher, it is now the oldest independent retailer in Eltham. They receive constant help and support from the entire family, with Jag’s mum Shanta working in store and her dad Natu providing their home-delivery service. Their three children are a great encouragement too; Sarika, Ayesha and Aaron help out mum and dad during the school holidays and at weekends.
In store, we have maintained the more traditional hardware and DIY side of the business, as well as diversifying into gardening and housewares. And now we are looking to the future again.
The building housing Avery Truman was built in 1930 and was originally used as a picture house. After the war it was converted into a dance hall and tea room, and it still boasts the original sprung dance floor. It is a testament to the strength of the local community that many people who used to dance there are now some of the store’s most loyal customers.
As owners of the oldest independent store in Eltham, we know that independent retailers are essential for the well-being of their local communities: not only are they convenient, but they have an un-matched level of personal service which is so important. , all of which they can provide at the lowest prices. This means that they can concentrate on the most important part of their business- looking after the customers.
